This theme explores how Islamic movements- from mainstream reformists to contemporary Islamist and post-Islamist actors- have shaped, challenged, and reimagined democratic transitions across the Muslim world. Far from being monolithic, these movements represent diverse visions of political engagement, ranging from moral reform and social activism to full participation in electoral politics. By examining key cases such as Indonesia, Tunisia, Turkey, Malaysia, and Morocco, this section highlights how Islamic movements negotiate the complex terrain between religious identity, public legitimacy, and democratic norms. It also investigates the tensions they face- ideological competition, authoritarian pushback, internal fragmentation, and shifting public expectations. Ultimately, this theme reveals that Islamic movements are not just observers of democracy but central participants whose choices and interpretations profoundly influence the prospects of democratic transformation in Muslim societies.
